How to Choose a Reliable Clothing Manufacturer in China: 10 Essential Tips
Published: September 2026 | 8 min read
Finding the right clothing manufacturer in China can make or break your fashion brand. With thousands of factories to choose from, how do you separate the reliable partners from the risky ones? In this guide, we share the 10 most important factors to consider when selecting a Chinese garment manufacturer.
1. Verify Their Business License and Experience
Always ask for the manufacturer’s business license and check how many years they’ve been in operation. A factory with 10+ years of experience is more likely to have stable production processes and quality control systems. Xufang Style has been manufacturing apparel for global brands since 2008.
2. Check Their Production Capacity
Be realistic about your order volume. A factory that’s too small will struggle with large orders; one that’s too large may treat you as a low-priority client. Ask about number of workers, monthly output, lead times for samples and bulk orders.
3. Evaluate Their Quality Control System
Quality control isn’t just about checking finished products. Ask if they have incoming material inspection, in-line quality checks during production, final AQL inspection, and support for third-party inspection (SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek).
4. Request Product Samples First
Never place a bulk order without approving a sample first. A sample tells you whether the factory can match your design specs, the actual fabric quality, stitching and finishing, and whether communication works smoothly.
5. Understand Their OEM/ODM Capabilities
Some factories only do cut-and-sew from your tech pack. Others offer full ODM services — design, fabric sourcing, pattern making, and production. Decide what you need: OEM means you provide the design, ODM means they help design based on your ideas.
6. Ask About MOQ
MOQ varies wildly between factories. Some require 500-1000 pieces per style; others accept 100-200 pieces for smaller brands. Be upfront about your order size and find a factory that matches your needs.
7. Check Communication Skills
Good communication is critical for smooth production. Evaluate whether they reply within 24 hours, understand your requirements, proactively flag issues, and have English-speaking staff.
8. Visit the Factory
If possible, visit the factory in person. If you can’t travel, request a live video tour. This shows you actual working conditions, machinery, and whether the factory matches what they claim online.
9. Review Their Export Experience
Manufacturing for domestic China is very different from exporting. Ask which countries they’ve exported to, and whether they understand international shipping terms, export documentation, size standards for your market, and labeling requirements.
10. Start with a Small Trial Order
Before committing to a large production run, start with a small trial order. This lets you test the factory’s reliability, quality, and communication without significant risk.
